Founded in the 19th century, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is among the 10 largest and 10 oldest general art museums in the country. This museum has a collection of more than 54,000 pieces of work. According to the website, the IMA “offers significant holdings of African, American, Asian, European and contemporary art, textiles and fashion art, as well as a growing collection of design arts.”
The IMA has not only a traditional art museum, but also a greenhouse and gardens, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres, and the Lilly House and Gardens. The Hundred Acres is an property that includes a lake, meadows, walking trails, and site responsive art pieces. The Lilly House is the former estate of J.K. Lilly Jr, who was a businessman, collector, and philanthropist. It has been completely restored to its former state.
