For 9 days each July, there is a Circus City Festival in Peru, Indiana. Downtown Peru “converts to an amusement park filled with rides, games, food, and entertainment for all.” This festival was created to celebrate the town’s circus heritage. As early as the late 19th century, many of the most famous circuses in America winter-quartered a few miles outside of Peru. Now the town has a Circus Museum, which explores the history of this unique form of entertainment. Headquartered in the same building as the museum is the Peru Amateur Youth Circus, whose members perform during the festival. The Circus City Band, which boasts a mix of professional and amateur members, also makes appearances. The festival also includes a Miss Circus City pageant and a parade.
