The Soldiers and Sailors Monument has stood in Monument Circle in Indianapolis since 1902. This structure memorializes Hoosiers’ participation in the Civil War. It is made of Indiana limestone and incorporates work from many different sculptures. Some pieces include “Victory,” “War and Peace,” “Dying Solider,” and “Return Home.” The sculptures have soldiers who represent many different types of military service, such as Navy crewmen, artillery crew, infantry, scout, and cavalry.
In the lower level of the monument is the Col. Eli Lilly Civil War Museum. Visitors can take the elevator or walk the 300 steps to the observation deck to get a view of downtown Indy.
